My first art director used a very simple system to manage projects: stickies on a whiteboard that would move between columns indicating the stage the project was in. Of all the project management methods I've tried, this remains by far my favorite.

The idea was to build a web-based application using AJAX that would allow drag-and-drop of the various stickies, with each being an editable record managed through a simple backend.
